The processes of  Making Cabinets

What you are required to do

Preparation of drawings, sketches etc. extract information to produce cutting lists and written specification

Produce a design brief including sketches Specification,

Scale drawing,

Cutting List.

Identify, select, prepare and maintain tools, equipment and work area to carry out the processes

Select tools, etc. for the immediate process.

Check that you have tools, cutter shapes, etc. suitable for the job.

Sharpen tools as necessary.

Ensure work area is prepared for the tasks at hand.   Put tools away that are no longer needed.

Produce patterns, templates, jigs, workshop tools and devices

Manufacture any pattern, jig or template required for shapes, joints or holding.

Identify, select materials, timber, board, etc to be used

Select the timber and board material that you are going to use.   Consider thickness, colour, strength property, tangential or radial boards,

Placing of defects/knots, etc. durability, grain, features, costs, etc.

Identify face and edges – apply marks.

Cut out components to given dimensions using machinery safely

Surface and thickness timber to specification.

Cut to overall lengths.

Use tools and equipment to perform practical tasks

Rehearse processes if necessary.

Cut out joints

Cut out joints.

Test for fit.

Adjust and refit.

Shape components.  Veneer surfaces.

Shape any components using appropriate methods by sawing, planing, moulding, fabricating, steaming, etc.

Veneer using, hammer, cauls, press.

Construct cabinets, tables, etc.

Select appropriate construction method:

Cabinet or Box construction,

Frame,

Table or stool,

Drawer.

Assemble cabinets, tables, etc.

Trial assemble, check dimensions, square, wind and fitting.

Apply appropriate adhesive,

Assemble and clamp.

Check accuracy and adjust as necessary,

Fit doors, drawers and hardware, etc.

Drawer construction, i.e. lap and common dovetails.  Flush, surface and mechanical.

Door construction, i.e. frame or solid.

Flush or surface fitted.

Pre fit ironmongery, check and remove for finishing.

Fit ironmongery after all appropriate finishes have been applied.

Apply carved mouldings

Apply mouldings using glue and pins, etc.

Make necessary repairs and adjustments

Check, repair, adjust as necessary.
