The Cutting List

MS Word Cutting List for printing
When the rod has been made up by the setter-outer a cutting list is prepared for all the material required for the job.

The list will go to the sawyer and machinist throughout the machining processes.  It is used by the machinist to enable the timber to be selected and cut to correct lengths with the minimum of wastage.

It is very important that the lengths are all cut to the correct lengths because the machinist sets the stops on the machine to locate the joint positions and any variations would cause a sizing problem.

An allowance for wastage will be built into the lengths to enable the jointing and assembly to be carried out without the joints breaking out.   A horn allowance is also included on frames and doors.   Extra waste should not be added because the timber is a valuable resource and multiplied by a long run of frames soon add up to a lot of money being wasted.

The horns on Door and window frames is to provide ‘building in’ on new-build properties and on doors to give protection in transit.   On replacement frames, the ‘horns’ or ‘joggles’ are removed before fixing and the same for the door.

The details found on the Cutting List include the following but they are usually different from one workshop to another depending on the practice of the company, etc.:

  • Job title,
  • Rod number and date,

  • Contract Number and date, Client, etc.

  • Item number,

  • Item Name,

  • Material used,

  • Number off,

  • Sawn size,

  • Finished size,

  • Length, total length.

  • Cross Section of material, moulding, etc.
